10th Planet Poway’s youth Jiu Jitsu program continues to shine after reaching the podium yet again, this time at the highly competitive Jiu Jitsu World League held at the Del Mar fairgrounds. 10th Planet’s instructors have amassed countless national and international medals which carries over into creating champions out of the children they teach.
10th Planet student Christine Chagala (9 yrs) took 2nd place in the girl’s no-gi Pre-teen division at the Jiu Jitsu World League held at the Del Mar fairgrounds. She was among 5 youth competitors representing 10th Planet Poway in various categories.
10th Planet’s Jiu Jitsu programs are no-gi, meaning they don’t use the karate-type uniform. Traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu relies on opponents wearing a gi for grabs and submissions, while no-gi is considered superior for self defense as athletes learn to submit an attacker regardless of clothing. This is ideal for children’s self defense as it’s unlikely a schoolyard bully, or any other attacker, will be wearing a gi.
How Does 10th Planet Teach Jiu Jitsu to Children?
At 10th Planet Poway, and most other Jiu Jitsu gyms, children are divided into groups based on age. Kids can start as young as 4 and will be placed in the 4 – 8 group. This group learns the fundamentals of the sport, how to be safe and how to follow instructions; 10th Planet instructors don’t shy away from putting kids on time-out who don’t follow the rules. Although the focus is on fundamentals and safety, this group learns chokes, armbars and other moves – all of which can be put into practice in everything-is-allowed live drills every Thursday.
For children who age out of the 4 – 8 category, or whose skill level allows them to practice safely with older kids, can move up to the 9 – 15 group. This group learns difficult, technical moves, and how to transition from one move to another. More time is spent sparring with partners than in the younger group, including mock tournaments. Many students in this group regularly compete in Jiu Jitsu tournaments.
