10th Planet Poway Claims Its Second IBJJF Team Title
On Sunday, August 9, 10th Planet Poway did it again.
Chase an IBJJF team title.
After a full day of competition at the IBJJF San Diego Summer International Open, our team captured the Adult & Masters No-Gi Overall Team Championship, bringing another IBJJF team title back home to Poway.
And we did it with a relatively small squad.
The final team standings:
- 1st — 10th Planet: 81 points
- 2nd — Alliance: 58 points
- 3rd — CheckMat: 40 points
We didn’t arrive with a massive tournament roster. 10th Planet and Alliance actually had the same number of competitors, which meant there was very little room for wasted opportunities. If we wanted the championship, our athletes had to win matches, reach podiums, and make their entries count.
They did exactly that.
With only a small group representing the team, 10th Planet Poway put together 81 academy points, finishing 23 points ahead of Alliance and 41 ahead of CheckMat.
This marks the second time 10th Planet Poway has won this title, and this one came through standout performances up and down the roster.
From Chasing the Title to Winning It Again
Before the tournament, we published 10th Planet Poway Chases IBJJF San Diego Team Title explaining exactly what we hoped to accomplish.
The goal wasn’t a secret. We wanted another team championship.
Training leading up to the tournament reflected that goal. Competition rounds became more strategic. Wrestling exchanges became more important. Athletes prepared for IBJJF scoring situations and learned when to push the pace, secure position, attack, or manage a lead.
Then Sunday arrived, and preparation turned into results.
Double Gold Leads the Way
Several 10th Planet Poway competitors put together outstanding performances in San Diego.
Dzhabrail Khasiev had one of the biggest days of the tournament, winning Adult Blue Belt Super-Heavyweight before entering the Open Class and winning again with a highlight submission.
Double gold.
Dzhabrail’s performance was especially important because the Open Class provides another opportunity to test yourself against competitors of different sizes and styles—and another opportunity to earn valuable team points.
His teammate David Antonio also had an excellent tournament. David earned Bronze in the Adult Blue Belt Featherweight division before stepping into the Adult Blue Belt Open Class and reaching the podium again with another bronze.
That put two 10th Planet teammates—Dzhabrail and David—on the Adult Blue Belt Open Class podium together for the 2nd time.
More Double Gold for John and Elva
The gold medals kept coming.
John Navilliat swept his Master 2 Purple Belt divisions, winning Lightweight gold and then taking Open Class gold for another double-gold performance.
Elva Montemayor matched him.
Competing at Master 1 Purple Belt, Elva won her Lightweight division and followed it by winning the Open Class as well, giving 10th Planet Poway another two Gold medals and another Double-Gold champion.
Those performances mattered far beyond individual medals. With a smaller squad competing, every athlete who advanced through a bracket became increasingly important to the championship race.
Geoff Adds Two More Podiums
Geoff Munoz also delivered a strong performance at Blue Belt Master 2.
Geoff battled his way to silver in the Middleweight division and then returned for the Open Class, where he earned bronze.
Two divisions.
Two podium finishes.
Kevin Berbrich Wins Black Belt Open Class
Head coach Kevin Berbrich wasn’t only coaching from the sidelines.
He competed too.
After taking Silver in the Master 1 Black Belt Ultra-Heavyweight division, Kevin entered the Open Class and came away with Gold, finishing the final with a beautiful Japanese Necktie submission.
For the head coach to be in the same trenches as the athletes—competing, taking risks, and contributing points toward the same championship—made the victory that much sweeter.
It also represents what we want the culture at 10th Planet Poway to be.
The coaches don’t just tell students how to compete.
They compete alongside them.

Isaac Cordova Represents 10th Planet at Black Belt
10th Planet Poway wasn’t the only part of the larger 10th Planet family making noise in San Diego.
10th Planet Jiu Jitsu standout Isaac Cordova put together a strong run in one of the tournament’s toughest divisions, earning Silver in the Adult Male Black Belt Featherweight division.
Reaching the podium at Adult Black Belt is never easy, and Isaac’s performance added another high-level result for 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu during a weekend filled with strong performances throughout the affiliation.
From rising blue belts to experienced black belts, San Diego showcased the depth of talent developing throughout the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system.
Our No-Gi Style Was Put to the Test
Winning under the IBJJF ruleset requires more than submissions.
You need wrestling, positional awareness, guard work, passing, scrambling ability, and an understanding of when points and advantages matter.
That’s exactly what we work to develop through our No-Gi Jiu Jitsu Program.
The 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system gives athletes the freedom to build creative and adaptable games. At 10th Planet Poway, we combine that flexibility with an increasing emphasis on wrestling and competition strategy.
Our Poway Wrestling Program has become a major piece of that development.
We want athletes who can wrestle when the match requires wrestling, attack from guard when the opportunity is there, scramble without panicking, control position when points matter, and hunt the finish when a submission opens.
San Diego gave us an opportunity to put that approach against strong competition.
The results speak for themselves.
Small Squad. Big Result.
We didn’t need the biggest squad in the building.
We needed our competitors to perform.
Across weight classes and belt levels, athletes reached podiums, won Open Classes, captured double gold, and accumulated enough points to create a 23-point margin over 2nd place.
For 10th Planet Poway, the trophy represents much more than points on a scoreboard.
It represents the competitors who entered the brackets.
The teammates who helped prepare them.
The coaches running from mat to mat.
The people yelling from behind the barricades.
And all the difficult rounds inside the academy that nobody outside the room ever sees.
This is our second IBJJF San Diego Adult & Masters No-Gi Team Championship.
Small squad. Another team title. And another championship coming home to Poway.
